All the public holidays to take in 2020

The first public holiday of the year, Human Rights Day is on a Saturday in 2020. Not ideal for taking a shot left to celebrate your rights, now is it?

But there are a few public holidays that fall on a Monday this year - meaning you don't have to splurge all your annual leave to take a few micro-breaks.

Easter's a stretch to Freedom Day, but you can still work in that Long Weekend

While it's often possible to combine these two holiday windows, 2020 is not one of those years. Good Friday will take place on 10 April, with Family Day or Easter Monday on 13 April.

But the good news is that Freedom Day falls on Monday, 27 April - a bonus Long Weekend in the bag.

Otherwise, you can stretch it with three days leave to take Tuesday 28 to Thursday 30 April off, pull in Worker's Day on Friday, 1 May and you'll have a lavish 9 days off in a row, including the weekends.

Winter rejuvenation isn't just for the youth

While Youth Day is cocooned in the middle of the June school holidays, 16 June is also on a Monday this year, which means another Long-Weekend to enjoy.

A Sunday Women's Day taking up Monday's space

This year National Women’s Day will roll over to Monday 10 August, as is the norm when a public holiday falls on a Sunday.

Spring into this long-weekend, also in the middle of the September School holidays. Heritage Day falls on Thursday, 24 September - but you can make the most of it by taking leave on Friday, 25 September for four full days off.

No KeDezemba bonus this year!

Schools seem to be closing earlier and earlier - with the year wrapping up on 2 December (re-opening 13 January 2021) in 2020 - with the Christmas public holidays all over the wrong place this year. Day of Reconciliation falls on 16 December, while Christmas Day is on Friday, 25 December, which means Boxing Day will fall on Saturday, 26 December.

Be that as it may, you'd have saved a whack of leave if you followed the other long-weekend pockets above - making December the perfect time to use it.
