Cape Town - The east coastal province of KwaZulu-Natal has recorded yet another successful Festive Season, and says the "festive season splurge" from holidaymakers ensured a R3 billion cash injection with "major economic spin-offs" for the local economy.

The province was a hive of activity over the festive season, and especially on New Year's Day, when over 30 000 people made their way to the Durban beachfront.

Although the event served as a catalyst for a major racial debacle in SA, TKZN welcomed all visitors saying the "fun must go on”.

TKZN reports that beach front hotels were full in Durban as well as the South and North Coast with the overall hotel occupancy at almost 90% in December.

KwaZulu-Natal, and especially Durban, is one of the hottest destinations for 2016.

If you're looking to be part of the action, there are a few big annual events to look forward to.

In February, the Midmar Mile, Dusi Canoe Marathon, PMB City Marathon and Metro FM Music awards are all high-profile events that will keep visitors to the area coming.

Durban's increasing popularity and influx of international tourists is partly due to the new airlines launching routes from the city last year. Turkish Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines and Qatar airways all announced increased air travel to and from Durban.

TKZN hopes that the new routes, and SA's weak rand will most offer a lengthened holiday season to international tourists.
