Emirates is putting some luxury in Durban's skies with its First Class offering making its debut in the city from 14 June to 4 August.

The airline showcased the suite at Africa's Travel Indaba in Durban, complete with a seat that turns into a bed, your own mini-bar and smiling Emirates flight attendants.

This is the first time that the world-famous First Class is coming to Durban as part of the airline's seasonal frequency increase. Each suite has a 32-inch HD LCD screen and a touch-screen pad that acts as a controller for the entertainment system.

Each passenger will also get moisturising pyjamas that use hydra active microcapsule technology and amenity bags exclusively designed by Bulgari.

It will be riding in on a Boeing 777-300ER which will have eight seats in First Class, 42 in Business Class and 310 seats in Economy.

Fouad Caunhye, regional manager for Southern Africa, sees it as a way to leverage Durban on the same level as Cape Town and Johannesburg.

"We are approaching ten years of operations to Durban this year, and it's fitting to mark that milestone with a showcase of our iconic First Class suite making its debut here next month."

He added that it has been a year of consolidation for Emirates, as the airline is making sure that it has the right capacity on the various routes within its network and that it is optimised.

One of their new routes for the year is a four-times-weekly service to Porto in Portugal, targeting the leisure market to this country.

And if the First Class price tag makes it feel like it might just be a fancy daydream, Emirates is offering the First Class experience at Business Class fares for flights from Durban during the seasonal increase until August.
