If seeing the countryside by bike sounds like your perfect idea of a holiday escape, why not opt for the 364km Overberg meander in the Western Cape?
Cape Cycle Routes (CCR) launched their fourth route on Monday, starting off at the Swellendam Town Hall and taking a journey through the Overberg with the Langeberg Mountains as your backdrop.

From Swellendam, the route pedals its way through to the most southern point of Cape Agulhas, then back up through the mountains to Bredasdorp and back to the coast at Hermanus.
On the way you can also pump some energy back into your legs with a sampling of the Elim Wine Route, and a few mountain bike trails in Elgin Valley.

Depending on how much you want to stop, the route takes between 3 to 6 days.
"This is more than a cycling route, it is a journey of self-discovery and one that will open your eyes to a beauty you never thought possible. The Cape Overberg is a place of great beauty, warmth and depth of personality and the Overberg Meander will ensure you are immersed in it all," reads the route's description on CCR's website.

Speaking at the launch event, the minister of Economic Opportunities Beverley Schäfer said, “This province is already host to so many major cycling events like the Cape
Town Cycle Tour and the Absa Cape Epic, but we wanted to showcase all the
corners of our province to people who love to ride, whether it’s in a timed
race setting like the Cape Town Cycle Tour, or under endurance conditions like
the Epic, or just because they love to get on a bike and see the world.”
The department launched the cycles routes as part of the
Project Khulisa strategy to grow the tourism sector and create new jobs. Other routes of CCR include Cross Cape, Cycle Tour 365 and the Cederberg Circuit.
