The wine industry can be a competitive field - but in the Breedekloof district the winemakers are more like old friends that love a bit of banter over each other's wines.

WATCH: A rare rainy day in Worcester

At one wine tasting evening trying out the area's famous Chenin Blancs, one winemaker was admonishing the other for not submitting her wine into a big competition, and the third one chimed in to agree that her wine is amazing.

The wine region has a very tight-knit group called the Breedekloof Makers -  which is also dominated by women at the forefront of wine production.

The district stretches around Rawsonville to Slanghoek, up the slopes of the mountains and down to the riverbanks of the Breede River - but it remains separate from the Worcester wine region - something that these winemakers are very quick to correct. Wine region borders, it seems, is hotly contested subject in the industry, especially whether or not a region is classified as coastal or not.

But to us non-wine-makers, none of this matters as much, as long as the wine tastes good. Breedekloof is white wine country, and a few of its cellars requires a call ahead to make an appointment for a wine tasting - but usually this means the winemaker will be your guide through the terroir of their grapes.

But it's not only wine that will entice you to this valley - mountain ranges that glisten with green and gold constantly envelopes you no matter where you turn, and you can wander through magical gardens at places like Bosjes, which specialises in farming flowers and tourists, according to one of its managers.

You can also satisfy your gin cravings at Monk's - the most random little tasting room in the middle of nowhere on the riverbanks - where they have weed-infused (CBD version) gin and are launching a CBD-tonic very soon in an effort to make the controversial green leaf more accepted in society.

Whatever you're hoping to find on a trip through the Breedekloof, you're bound to find something you didn't think you were looking for.
