You go to Franschhoek to do the wine tram, to hop from wine farm to wine farm to sip on award-winning bubblies and Chardonnays, and to eat fine dining tapas prepared by the likes of chef David Schneider.
You don't necessarily go there to get high. Or so I thought.
Situated on the Dieu Donné Vineyards estate, carefully perched on the slopes overlooking the Merlot vineyards that blanket this hill, is luxe guesthouse, Maison Montagne. The stunning valley which lies beneath is the ultimate backdrop for what you're about to experience: a feeling of being punch, drunk in love.
Was it the slightly elevated altitude of this beautiful-from-every-angle place or the person I was with? An unexpected blend of both, perhaps.
PICS: Why it's so hard to leave SA's second oldest wine farm
Literally meaning 'House on the mountain' this stay is a home away from home in the sense that you feel welcome, comfortable and rather special when you walk through the doors of this luxurious space. Recently renovated, this old farm house now offers guests a modern suite with incredible attention to detail. The his and hers sinks and local Pichulik jewellery key chains are just some of the very thoughtful touches.
Floating high above the rest of the valley, you have to pause and look at the sky at night while holding your partner's hand - the moon and the stars seem brighter and bolder. Electric. This valley is very much alive, yet it is also quiet and almost remote. The positioning allows you the luxury of the city and the feel of the countryside all at once.
This is your house on the mountain now.
WATCH: A luxury Boulders breakaway ideal for love birds
Spend your days exploring the historic town, laze about by the outdoor pool or wine taste next door at Dieu Donné Vineyards. Also, nothing wrong with spending a lot of time in their incredibly comfy beds...
After breakfast, just as you lap up that last bit of delicious Eggs Benedict, you catch the view again. That view behind your partner sitting across from you. How wonderfully it all dovetails. And you breathe in the final bit of love high before you have to pack up and leave.
Mighty, good stuff this much-needed Franschhoek dose of wonder.
