SA Freedom Weekend Insider: Durban brings the weekend flava

The weekend is back and we've got your long-weekend, Freedom Day schedule served fresh and piping hot for Durban!

Here's what's cooking in the spicy city this weekend:

Friday, 27 April

SEE: Check out the initiation of the Elysium Festival throwing down at Hella Hella Adventure Centre in Richmond, Natal Midlands. Gates to the three day festival (27 - 29 April) opens at 06h00 on Friday, 27 April and the fun kicks off at 11h00. Tickets can be bought here

DO: Play Action Cricket over at the Action Sports Arena in the KZN Midlands, Pietermaritzburg or Durban North Dolphins, Umhlanga Rocks. Sessions are 70 minutes and bookings are essential. Prices vary on the sport and type of game played (social or professional) and can be viewed here. Registration of your team and booking can be done here

TASTE: Lick your lips over at the Taste Away Craft Festival taking place at Jonsson Kings Park Stadium Outer Fields in Jacko Jackson Drive, Stamford Hill between 11h00 and 20h00. Enjoy a variety of tasty food vendors and buzzing beverages. Ticket prices are: R60 for kids aged between 2 - 13 yrs old, R130 for adult phase 1 tickets and R150 for adult phase 2 tickets - tickets can be bought here

Saturday, 28 April

SEE: Check out the Plan B Essenwood Saturday Market in Stephen Dlamini Road, Berea. The market is open from 09h00 until 14h00 and includes entertainment for the kids too!

DO: Dance your way in freedom at the Freedom Dance shaking into motion at Casablanca Lifestyle in Bhejane Road, Molweni Durban. The festivities sway into motion at 12h00 and entrance is free. 

TASTE: Swish on by to Surf Riders Food Shack in Erskine Terrace, Addington Beach. With meals costing an average of R80 and comfy and laid back setting - this place is sure to have you laxed and well fed on a lazy Saturday afternoon or after a solid surf sesh.

EXPLORE: Fly on down to view some incredible birds at the Umgeni River Bird Park located in Riverside Road, Durban North along the Umgeni River. The park is open from 09h00 to 17h00 every day (except Christmas day) and charges an entry fee of R55 for adults, R36 for kids aged between 3 - 12 yrs old and R30 for pensioners. Catch a bird show from 11h00 to 14h00 every Tuesday through Sunday.

Sunday, 29 April

SEE: Enjoy some live music and make your Sunday sunny at Beach Bums situated in Casuarina Beach Drive, Casuarina Beach Tongaat. The fun starts at around 12h00 and is sure to make your Sunday a funday. 

DO: Get crafty at the CraftFest going down at Shongweni Farmer's & Craft Market in Shongweni Resource Reserve, Shongweni, Outer West Durban. The market runs strong from 10h00 until 16h00. Tickets cost R100 (presale adults), R120 (adults at the door), R50 (kids aged 12 - 17 yrs old) and FREE for kids under 12 yrs old - tickets can be bought here

TASTE: Get your Havana-ooh-na-na vibes out at the Havana Grill this Sunday. This delectable restaurant is nestled in Suncoast Casino, Battery Beach Road in North Beach. This snazzy wine and dine joint averages at R150 and is sure to have you mentally singing Havana-ooh-na-na in the classic elegance setting. View their light lunch menu here

EXPLORE: Experience the serenity of a scenic, non-Metrorail train ride. Take a trip with the Umgeni Steam Railway and travel the Valley of 1000 Hills from Kloof to Inchanga in a vintage fashion. For the timetable and prices, see their website.
