As we approach the colder months in South Africa, many of us dream of escaping to a warmer environment to enjoy sun-filled days and forget about the winter chills.

On the other hand, some of us embrace the cold and can’t wait to snuggle up in front of the fire with marshmallows and a cup of hot chocolate or that lovely glass of wine.

With the colder months creeping closer has a couple of suggestions for top winter breaks across South Africa. Whether you choose to soak up the balmy winter sun or the crackling of a fire, there are amazing winter breaks that will guarantee a great holiday experience for those single, attached or with their families.

Remember as winter is low season and hotels tend to be quieter it takes a wise (wo)man to plan some time off during the winter months and there will be fantastic specials up for grabs.

If you travel outside of the winter school holidays, there will also be more availability allowing for a variety of options wherever you decide to go for your mid-year break.

WARM: It's the secret Season along the Garden Route

If you've been guilty of labeling the Garden Route as an elongated seaside stretch of retirement village along the N2 - you're about to be surprised.

The Garden Route offers an easy winter escape, away from the crowds and masses - but with some kick-ass adventures on offer too.

It's obvious really... what can you expect when you put together a magical forest, the world's highest bungee, an enormous concentration of Great White sharks (right on the coastline) and some adventure wanderlust!?

COLD: Cudldle-up in Hogsback

There is a wild rumour that this hamlet huddled in a fold of the Amathole mountain range, was in fact the inspiration for JRR Tolkien’s Middle Earth. Completely unconfirmed, the tenuousness of this connection just adds to the myth and mystery that seems to be the kindling which fuels the homely hearthfire that is Hogsback. It's also a great spot to catch some snow, when it does happen in SA, during winter.
