Going on honeymoon straight after your wedding is not necessarily standard practice anymore. Couples mix it up and pay off their wedding first then opt for a trip a few months later, going on adventures they've properly saved and planned for.

And not all couples choose island resort honeymoons either. What about a road trip through South Africa's small dorpies, or a trip to the Namibian desert?

Here are a few off-beat honeymoon getaways to consider:

Wind your way through the Overberg

A lot of couples road trip South Africa, stopping at quaint small towns along the way, choosing to be enveloped by the charm and budget-friendly nature of this type of honeymoon.

Choose an area like the Overberg or Karoo, or go bigger covering lots of distance as you trek your way through South Africa. Or head up the West Coast, waaaaaaay up and make your way slowly up to the Namibian desert. Stop at lesser-known places along the way, like Papendorp or even Hondeklipbaai and discover some of South Africa's most quiet areas.

Coast along SA's roaring Wild Coast for your next road trip

Head to the beach, minus the resort and make your way up the Wild Coast. Go feel the spray at Magwa Waterfalls or Hole in the Wall, or go on an adrenaline-fuelled journeys like 4x4 tours or zip line your way to absolute honeymoon bliss in Kwelera River, Leopard Kloof and Areena Valley.

Take a hike! Plan a long hike, like going to the lush Tsitsikamma area to do the 5-day Otter Trail. Or even consider doing the Fish River Canyon in Nam for the ultimate post-wedding bonding experience.

You can also plan a trip to somewhere just as green and hiker-friendly, like the magnificent Natal Midlands. The Nottingham Road area is ideal for those seeking a low-key style honeymoon.

Spilling the tea on Sri Lanka

Trek via train and have your own adventure a la Darjeeling Limited. Green is definitely the warmest colour in Sri Lanka. Take a 7-hour train journey from Ella to Kandy, or the other way around, as you take in a landscape defined by mountain views and tea plantations and see why it's been dubbed "the world's most beautiful train trip"

Go build sandcastles in the desert

Namibia might just be the exact opposite of an island resort experience. Go chasing magical surroundings and head for Sossusvlei.

This salt and clay pan area is surrounded by high red dunes and is located in the southern part of the Namib Desert. Choose to stay in a tent or go a bit more luxe as you take in the hot sunsets and stretches of desert that seem to go on forever.
