Cape Town - It comes as no shock to us, really. Because South Africans know how good the street food in our hottest city is. Nonetheless, the fact that Durban has been named as one of the best street food cities in the WORLD - alongside other big street food names like Bangkok, Mumbai, Istanbul and Marrakesh - makes our hearts burst with pride.

We've come to love the East Coast city for its hot hearty meals - from the iconic South African bunny chow to those spicy Masala Pineapple kebabs. Now, the world knows Durban's secrets as well, as CNN has named it southern Africa's reigning street food champ!

"The city is known for its curries, which over the generations have adapted to South African ingredients and tastes," they say.

One of our favourite hides, Little Gujarat, also gets a mention, naturally. This vegetarian-only spot offers the distinctly Durban bunny chow, which CNN describes as "a hollowed out half-loaf of bread filled with curry, like an edible takeaway container".

"Little Gujarat, on Prince Edward Street downtown, is a humble but revered institution that remains true to the classic Tea Room takeaway," Louis Foerie, a Durbanite tells CNN.

The 24-hour stopover Sunrise Chip & Ranch, better known as Johnny's Rotis, gets praised for their 'comforting rotis'. "It's great to soak up the munchies," Foerie says. "The ultimate Durban street food experience, supported by generations."

Also Afro's Chicken, which sits right by the beach in a revamped container, get our vote as well as CNN's.
