Cape Town - South Africa has an abundance of beautiful hiking trails from the southern-most tip all the way up North to the borders of Mozambique and Namibia. 

Traveller24 has put together the best hiking trails where you can climb steep mountains, walk alongside waterfalls, explore hidden forests and venture over hills. 

Each hike is different. While some might not be suitable to your level of fitness, the holidays are always a great time for a fun challenge.

Wild Coast Hotel-Hopping Walk - Eastern Cape

This is a five-day luxury hike through the Transkei. Make your way down south along ancient cliffs, ocean views and unique Eastern Cape birds.

Fitness level: Moderate

Pondo Hopper - Wild Coast

Choose between a three-day or five-day hike alongside deep estuaries, Waterfall Bluff and meet locals while you trek through the delightful Pondo Village.

Overnight stays are in safari tents. 

Fitness level: Moderate

Distance: 44 km - 67 km 

Wolhuter Wilderness Trail - Kruger National Park 

A three-day guided wilderness trail in the Kruger National Park allows you to get up close and personal with the wild. The journey is informative with overnight stays in rustic huts.

Watch out for mosquitos and stay hydrated. 

Fitness level: Moderate 

Distance: up to 20km per day

Blindekloof Hiking Trail - Eastern Cape

This one-day hike takes you along the cool Blindekloof Stream to the Crystal Tavern Pool in the Groendal Wilderness area.

Fitness level: Easy 

Distance: 16 km

The Dolphin Trail - Garden Route

Enjoy a two-day hike at your own speed along this Tsitsikamma based route in through the Langbos Forest. You will walk through The Fernery & Misty Mountain Reserve. 

The trail is open to extreme mountain bikers too.

Fitness level: Moderate

Distance: 17 km

Donkey Trail - Calitzdorp

This is a four-day trail through the Little Karoo with the assistance with donkeys. By doing the trail, you support the donkey rehabilitation program and give back to the local communities. You stay over at The Living Waters Mountain Estate, in tents in the veld and at the Swartberg Nature Reserve. 

Fitness level: Moderate

Whale Trail De Hoop - Overberg 

The five trail takes you from Potberg to Koppie Alleen in the De Hoop Nature Reserve. Booking in advance to secure a spot during whale season and enjoy this trek along the gorgeous coast and Potberg mountains the journey of a lifetime. 

Fitness level: Moderate 

Distance: 53 km

Beach Comber Perlemoen Trail - Walker Bay

This is a four-day trail along the unspoiled Overberg Coast. You will see the large seal breeding colony, Quoin Point light house, the Buffelsjags fishing village, two shipwrecks and the Ghost town - a deserted holiday village buried in the sand.

Spend the nights in luxury accommodation or self-catering guesthouses. 

Fitness level: Easy

Distance: Up to 15 km per day

Giants Cup - Drakensberg

This three-day adventure takes you through two mountain vistas, the Giants Cup & Hodgson’s Peak with stops at rock pools, mountain streams and swinging bridges. Stay over at three and four-star guesthouses and bed and breakfasts. 

Fitness level: Moderate

Distance: Up to 13 km per day

Rim of Africa - Southern Africa

This is a 56-day hike from Clanwilliam to George - the longest mountain traverse of its kind in SA as well as Africa. Trek through multiple CapeNature reserves and 180 private properties. The multi-faceted route takes you through Grootvaderbos, Gouritz River and the Outeniqua regions.

Be prepared for the adventure of a lifetime, cold-water bucket washes, outdoor camps and roughing it up. 

Fitness level: Advanced 

Distance: 650 km
