Travel is an experience that is meant to be enjoyed, a chance to appreciate the wonder of existence and its various physical manifestations all over this planet. From the wonders of ancient civilisations in the middle ages and the ruins they left behind to the technological marvels of cities in Asia, from the mega-diversity of nature in South America to the desolation and otherworldly chill of the arctic circle - there is much to see and marvel at.

That being said, there is also, unfortunately, much to be concerned about on this beautiful planet from political violence, social unrest, crime and natural disasters not to mention the ever-present spectre of medical risks.

In South Africa, for example, there is a medium travel risk, which means that "periodic political unrest, violent protests, insurgency and/or sporadic acts of terrorism occur. Travellers and international assignees may face risk from communal, sectarian or racial violence and violent crime. Capacity of security and emergency services and infrastructure varies. Industrial action can disrupt travel."

On the other hand South Africa is seen as a low medical risk country, which means that "appropriate standard of care throughout the country/region. Most specialist care widely available. High-quality emergency and dental services and a wide range of quality prescription drugs available. Low risk of infectious diseases."

Luckily, there is a way to mitigate or greatly reduce these risks and the first step in doing so is to identify and locate them. That's where this risk map comes in. Created by specialist risk consultancy, Control Risks, it is an easy to use map of the various risks that you may want to consiwhen planning your next sojourn abroad.

Check out the map below to scout out any potential risks for your next trip. For greater detail, click on the zoom buttons at the bottom of the display and also find the key of the map at the bottom left of the map.
