This adventure was developed as a partnership between Bhejane and one of our specialist guides, Paul Wigley. Having spent many years living in the Eastern Cape; Paul’s knowledge of the area is extensive and has afforded him insights that reveal the Wild Coast as a hidden and undiscovered wonderland – one of the last remaining parts of “Africa”, within South Africa.
Not only is it safe, but on this tour you will be rewarded with the most stunning landscapes, beaches that go on “forever” and some of the warmest and most hospitable people in our country. Where else can you wake up to a herd of Eland on the beach. Rolling grasslands that seem to melt into the sea, coastal forests rich in birdlife, wildlife and plant diversity.
Join us for a guided trip into South Africa's last unspoilt wonderland.
Vehicles: 4 x 4 and 2 x 4 with high clearance will manage the terrain.
Your tour leader is an experienced nature conservationist and adventure guide who will be in radio contact with you at all times and impart a wealth of biological, cultural, historic and four-wheel drive knowledge.
Three meals a day will be prepared by our experienced bush chef in his mobile kitchen, with fresh salads, potjiekos, braais and many other surprises appearing on the menu. The good old “koffie pot” will be on the fire from six till late.
Our logistics crew will pitch and take down the camps at all the overnight stops we visit. Tents and tables are provided by Bhejane Adventures.
This is a true adventure trip with lots of sand and off-road driving, but the Bhejane crew do have the “know how” and recovery equipment to assist with off-road problems.
Though our bush-camps will be interesting and rustic, you will at all times be safe, the crew will spare no effort to make you comfortable, provide you with good wholesome food and, most importantly, see that you have a good time.

Our trip starts at Double Mouth Nature Reserve, where we meet our tour leader.
Double Mouth is one of the Eastern Cape's best kept secrets. Situated in a pristine coastal nature just 4km away from Morgan's Bay, the reserve boasts one of SA’s most picturesque campsites where two rivers meet in a pristine estuary and carve a single course through forested dunes to the sea. Fish Eagles, Crowned Eagles, Red-Billed Woodhoopoes and several species of Kingfishers patrol the placid waters and forest fringe, making this a bird watchers paradise.
Upon arrival, the Bhejane crew will be waiting, the faithful coffee pot will be boiling and the smell of the first of our dinner will be most welcoming.
Day 2 / 3/4 (Dwesa Nature Reserve)
Rich in biodiversity, Dwesa offers a wide variety of wildlife, abundant birding and a host of activities - and what better way to start your adventure than a walk on the wild side with community guides exploring the reserve and forest fringes, fishing, snorkelling, taking a boat trip over the Mbashe River or working on your tan – all the while enjoying the pristine beauty that Dwesa offers.
The 3500ha Dwesa Nature Reserve offers a range of forest trails for the more adventurous and to date 290 bird species have been recorded. It is also possible to spot whales and since it is a marine protected area the beaches are spectacular!
We will have two days to enjoy this wonderful reserve, with hearty Bhejane bush cuisine and camp fire dinners each night before heading for our next campsite between Coffee Bay and Hole In The Wall.
After a wholesome breakfast we pack up camp and head north, taking the scenic route and the back-roads
The Transkei section of the Wild Coast is rural South Africa at its best and the roads to the coast lead us through the Xhosa heartland, a stunning landscape of rolling green hills dotted with thatched rondavels, offering glimpses into a culture far removed from our own.
The next night will be spent at a spectacular campsite, right on the edge of the Ocean. Between Coffee Bay and Hole in the Wall.
Day 6 & 7
After a leisurely breakfast, we pack up camp and head for our next destination: Hluleka Nature Reserve. The drive is not a long one, and there is plenty of opportunity to stop and take in the rugged landscape and wild beauty this area is so well known for.
Accommodation for the next two nights is in beautiful and well-appointed chalets with sea views, and zebras calmly grazing on the lawns.
Hluleka Nature Reserve is another of the Wild Coast’s best kept secrets and this tranquil reserve showcases a diverse range of eco systems – rocky seashores, golden beaches, lagoons and lush forests. The beach at Hluleka Nature Reserve is completely hidden from the crowds and if you find yourself on this cove with its large sandy stretch, cliffs, meandering paths and milkwood forest, it feels like you’ve just stumbled upon a private beach.
The high vantage points along the coastline make great lookout points for dolphin and whale watching. Humpback and Southern Right Whales migrate from the Antarctic to the shores of South Africa to calve and are often seen from the coast.
Hluleka Nature Reserve works closely with the community and they offer cultural tours; you can also go hiking through the forest, do a bit of birdwatching and try to spot the elusive Narina trogon and go fishing (not allowed in the reserve and a permit needs to be obtained).
Our last night around the camp fire is with new friends and shared memories of the wild and wonderful place.
We depart after breakfast and head home with new insights of the road less travelled.
