The Team

Your tour leader is an experienced nature conservationist and adventure guide who has spent many years working as a conservation officer in Zululand.  He will be in radio contact with you at all times and impart a wealth of biological, cultural, historic and four-wheel drive knowledge.

Three meals a day will be prepared by our experienced bush chef in his mobile kitchen, with fresh salads, potjiekos, braais and many other surprises appearing on the menu. The good old “koffie pot” will be on the fire from six till late.  Our logistics crew will pitch and take down the camps at all the overnight stops we visit. Tents and tables are provided by Bhejane Adventures.

This is not a very “technical” 4x4 trip, but should you experience any difficulty, the Bhejane crew do have the “know how” and recovery equipment to assist with off-road problems.  Though our bush-camps may be rustic, you will at all times be safe, the crew will spare no effort to make you comfortable, provide you with good wholesome food and, most importantly, see that you have a good time.

Adventure itinerary

Day 1:

We meet at 14h00 in the Ezemvelo Kosi Bay campsite in the Isimangaliso Wetland Reserve, giving us enough time to settle in and do a short 4X4 drive to the Kosi Bay Mouth to visit the renowned traditional Fish traps on the expansive lake system while offering a rare opportunity to appreciate Leatherback and Loggerhead turtles which can be found along the sandy beaches and shores

World Heritage Site Lake St Lucia will provide adventurers with an opportunity to enjoy flocks of flamingoes, hippos, crocodiles and pelicans, while chilling close to elephants, giraffes and other wild animals which are found on the Lakes shores and we will enjoy sundowners at a view site overlooking the lakes with our first dinner, served Bhejane style around the camp fire.

Day 2:

After a hearty breakfast, we drive to Tembe Elephant Park to explore the 4x4 routes, hopefully seeing one of Africa’s giant tuskers and spend some time at Mahlesela Pan hide.   Tembe Elephant Park (home to the biggest and smallest of Africa’s wild game – the largest African elephants and the smallest suni antelope) is also a refuge of the big 5 and is a birder’s delight.

We enjoy a picnic lunch and game viewing at our own pace before returning to Kosi Bay Camp in the afternoon.

Day 3:

Today we head north through the border and into Mozambique and thanks to a brand-new tar road we enter the Maputo Special Reserve very soon after the border post proceeding into the Maputo Special Reserve so called due to the over 400 elephants that roam the area together with a multitude of reintroduced game.

The Maputo Special Reserve is a component of the Lubombo Trans Frontier Conservation Area (TFCA), one of the Peace Parks established between Mozambique, South Africa and Swaziland.  It is a magnificent area, with lakes, wetlands, swamp forests, mangroves and pristine coasts and is seen as an important link between marine, coastal and inland components.  Supporting an exceptionally high number of endemic species of fauna and flora the reserve is part of the Maputaland-Pondoland-Albany Biodiversity Hotspot, thus part of one of earth’s 36 biologically richest and most endangered terrestrial ecoregions.

We traverse the length of the park, taking in the spectacular lakes and wildlife while heading north to Santa Maria where we spend the next 4 nights camping on Maputo Bay, just south of Inhaca Island.   We arrive at our campsite in the afternoon, leaving enough time for a leisurely sundown stroll along the beach before dinner.

Day 4:

Today we spend exploring “Coral Gardens” snorkelling in the calm warm waters of Inhaca Island within a Marine reserve. We set up a beach camp with umbrellas, deck chairs, drinks and snacks and relax

Inhaca Island, just north of the Maputo Special Reserve and Santa Maria, includes a marine protected area with spectacular coral reefs and mangroves offering remarkable snorkelling and birding opportunities.  In addition to the spectacular snorkelling and swimming, one can take in the surroundings by walking along Inhacas beautiful beaches.

In the afternoon, our covered boat-cruise takes us back to camp and dinner.

Day 5:

Today we enjoy a leisurely morning simply chilling taking in the blissful surroundings and just having some “me” time. This is the day to enjoy a beach walk, some fishing or just relaxing with a book.

Later on we explore the fascinating mangroves of Maputo Bay and Inhaca Island by boat and while canoeing up this unique ecosystem which is host to many specialised species.  Your guide will identify the different species and explain how they interact within the mangrove system. This area is also a highlight for birders and there is always a chance of spotting the elusive Mangrove Kingfisher.  Snacks and sundowners are served on the boat before heading back to camp for dinner.

Day 6:

A day spent at leisure. We set up a beach lunch on the eastern side of the peninsula and everyone has the option to explore at their own pace. Deep sea fishing charters can be arranged for the adventurous in addition to scuba diving activities however these are optional activities and the cost for these are not included in the tour price.

This evening we feast on seafood at one of the local restaurants.

Day 7:

After a scrumptious but early breakfast, we head south along the sandy 4x4 tracks, game viewing along the way to the southern part of the reserve where we arrive at our own private beach camp, nestled between lagoon and sea.

Our last dinner together is spent on the beach under the stars.

Day 8:

Sadly, after breakfast, it’s time to head south through the border and back into South Africa.  Once we are safely through the border, the Bhejane team bids farewell and its time to head home.
