New Year's Eve is celebrated around the globe, with Sydney being the first major city to celebrate the New Year at midnight.
When the clock struck 00:00 and it became the year 2000, I was lucky enough to be sat right in front of the Eiffel Tower in Paris with my parents and brother. Unfortunately, the count-down clock broke about 10 seconds before midnight, but fireworks lit up the sky, ushering in a new era.

But how does one choose the best city for a New Year's Eve bash? This is up to the individual, of course, as we all have different expectations and criteria for what makes a good event. Some of us want fireworks and fun, while others want to keep it low-key, celebrating with family and friends at home.
I just want some bubbly and good company.
Here's a few suggestions for your New Year's Eve plans in years to come:
Alcohol was banned in Iceland until 1989, but since Icelanders have gained a reputation of enjoying a good party. According to Culture Trip Reykjavik is known for its massive bonfires and good vibes on New Year's Eve.
A nice alternative spot to consider.
Dubai has so much to offer, it's basically Vegas, just closer to home for South Africans.
Fast-becoming a major food destination, be sure to indulge in fine-dining on New Year's Eve, then go stand in awe of the world's tallest building, The Burj Khalifa and bless your eyes with a fireworks display like no other.
Some of the best celebrations go down in Cape Town's Long Street or V&A Waterfront area.
Not for everyone, as it's a busy, bustling vibe with big crowds, but its well-worth doing once.
And the party doesn't stop there. On the 1st and 2nd of January the city stays busy with the Kaapse Klopse, entertaining their way through the streets of the Mother City.
