Those people constantly jetting off to overseas destinations - where do they get the money and the leave?
But if you're part of the group looking for a budget local trip that just consists of lounging on the beach for free and hopping from one town to the next, this might the itinerary right up your alley.

Starting in Cape Town, you'll only have about one hour's drive between each destination over five nights and six days, to Betty's Bay, Gansbaai, L'Agulhas, Witsand and Still Bay.
And all for under R5 000 per person!
- Accommodation: R400 a day per person for five days - each of the towns have a backpackers accommodation option.
- Food: R300 a day per person for six days (includes trip back home) - this would mostly be self-catering groceries and take-away meals
- Petrol: Roughly R940 for 896km in total - this is worked out using the specs from the most popular car in SA which uses 6.6l/100km.
- Activities: This itinerary is for the beach bum - so just bring your board, towels and umbrella for free fun.

For two people:
If you're sharing the road trip with your best buds or a significant other, the cost of petrol per person would come down and you can put that extra cash towards nicer accommodation or splurging on restaurant meals.
You can either make it a long weekend from Thursday to Tuesday utilising public holidays, or if you have little patience for crowds take it from Monday to Saturday and relax a day at home before heading back to work.

Day 1: Betty's Bay
Driving time: 1h20m
Budget accommodation suggestion: Nomad's Land
There are few places along the Western Cape coastline that are quite as wild as Betty's Bay.
Although a large provincial road cuts right through it, the town has managed to remain somewhat pristine, characterised by its white-sand and rocky-outcropped secret beaches and rugged mountains.

Day 2: Gansbaai
Driving time: 1h20m
Budget accommodation suggestion: Gansbaai Backpackers
The Great White Capital - while dipping into these waters keep it shallow - unless you want to spend extra for a cool cage dive!
This is the perfect town for coastal walks in Walker Bay Nature Reserve, checking out Klipgat Cave in De Kelders and watching the waves crash on its cliffs.

Day 3: Struisbaai
Driving time: 1h15m
Budget accommodation suggestion: Cape Agulhas Backpackers

Day 4: Witsand
Driving time: 2h11m
Budget accommodation suggestion: Witsand Backpackers
Witsand is where the Bree River meets the ocean - most famous for its expansive sand dunes begging for a sandboard session and the waves loving the kitesurfers.
It's also a great spot where you can look out for whales on the horizon - this is a special haven for babies - so add a little wildlife to your trip.
Day 5: Still Bay
Driving time: 1h16m
Budget accommodation suggestion: Backpackers Still Bay
Stilbaai is packed over December, but the rest of the year it can be a tranquil place with the best beach and waves on offer.
You can either opt to laze on the main swimming beach with everyone else, or hop over to the other side of the river to the beach next to the harbour. Your other option is also to swim along the Goukou River for something a little different.
