The Durban art gallery is unmissable and the coffee’s good too

For an art experience that’s far more than staring wistfully at paintings, head to the KZNSA in Durban’s Glenwood. Leafy green and much-loved, the suburb casually combines residential, business, leisure, and retail zones  - and holding a keen attraction for the arty among us, Glenwood’s natural community support for culture comes to life at the KZNSA Gallery.

Intimate Art Experiences

Located just around the corner from Durban’s “second Florida Road”, Helen Joseph Road, the KZNSA Gallery is the flagship project of the KwaZulu-Natal Society of Arts (KZNSA). Established in 1902, the KZNSA has gone on to become a lighthouse in the South African arts scene, with the gallery space showcasing some of the country’s most revered, and emerging, artistic talents. Three exhibition spaces welcome visitors to experience art as it should be – personal, meaningful, and intimate.

I found the perfect corn cake breakfast this morning.

Kicking Back at the KZNSA

The Arts Café bustles with locals from the business to creative set. A convenient meeting spot, with free Wi-Fi and wonderful coffee, The Arts Café is an institution among Durbanites. Its menu merges casual fare with interesting twists, pairing well with a crispy cold one whether for brunch or sundowners.

It’s here that I find the most beautiful thing I need for a wonderful meal: crisp on the outside, and smashed together with avocado, spinach and salsa, two corn cakes, made just for me. Under the dappled sunlight created by the trees, I’m reminded why this is a loved lunch spot for families and friends. Kids are free to play on the jungle gym, closely watched by their parents and the café appointed childminders. Meanwhile, in the quiet and cool shade of the indoor tables, busy workers check their emails and plot their next big move in the business world.

Today was a very cool day. Nice to see you again @kznsagallery ????

Take home something cool and crafty

Merging art and retail comes easily to the KZNSA, with the well-stocked shop selling locally-made curios, crafts, and other products. Specially selected goods and gifts offer shoppers the opportunity to take home something a little unusual and unique, while the shop supports local artists and craftspeople as a retail space. Once a year, the shop expands into the gallery, transforming the space into a festival of South African talent. The annual Buzzart exhibition marks the start of the festive season in Glenwood, and is an essential stop for every Durban gift giver.

Suburban spaces for art aren’t often so well-supported but, as the KZNSA’s diverse offering and long-standing reputation shows us, it’s easy when you mix it up with retail and relaxation.  Head on down to the KZNSA Gallery in Bulwer Road, and open your city under the summer sunshine.

Step out of your comfort zone and discover all the amazing art that Durban has to offer this summer with Heineken. Enjoy a Heineken and indulge in these delicacies while appreciating the beauty of the city. #OpenYourCity.

Pretty impressed that I've managed to take a good photo here. High five, self!
