Cape Town - The Niagara Falls on the international border between Canada and the United States has become the latest natural wonder to add a zip line to its tourist offering.
In Cape Town, on the iconic Table Mountain natural wonder, it is already possible for adventurers to zip line in the Constantia Nek valleys.
Now, Niagara Falls can caught up with the fast-paced adventure activity.
The zip line, MistRider Zipline to the Falls, sits on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls and debuted last month. The ride features four parallel ziplines, travelling 670 metres through the Niagara Gorge.
"We can't make these into museums. We have to keep the general public — the folks that these places have been set aside for — we have to keep them motivated to get out there," Tom Benson, co-founder and chief experience officer at WildPlay Element Parks, which built the Niagara Falls zip line, says.
"How do you take a teenager and get them away from a game console to something that is going to capture their imagination?" he asked. The zip line, apparently, hits the spot... Check it out:
The booming popularity of commercial zip lines over the past five years means more people are experiencing nature from dizzying heights.
While critics argue the towering structures and screaming riders diminish nature's grandeur, proponents see them as a way to keep people interested in iconic spaces in the 21st century.
Across the globe there are some serious adrenaline-inducing zip lines.
A zip line ride in Mexico's Copper Canyon runs more than 2.4 kilometres, while one in Nepal has a drop of more than 600 metres! Another in our very own Sun City in South Africa, boasts top speeds of 160 kilometres per hour!
Zip line fans say it's possible to marvel at nature while whizzing above it at highway speeds.
At Niagara Falls, WildPlay's Benson said his four lines angling more than 670 metres along the Canadian side of the gorge were designed to be sensitive to the local environment.
