Cape Town - The Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria has a new feature that will get social media enthusiasts and sweet treat aficionados very excited.

A concrete bench in the shape of a koeksister has been placed at the foot of the large main staircase. With the spectacular backdrop, it has been labled a 'selfie bench,' allowing people to snap pictures of themselves with the famous monument in the background.

IOL reports that the bench was designed by Peter Mathews and formed part of the Cool Capital Biennale. According to Mathews they wanted a modern interpretation of the koeksister, thus the idea to incorporate it with the social media fad of selfies.

We scoured Instagram to see if the bench has been attracting keen selfie-takers and it seems like there's still a lot of room for growth.

Here are three of the first pics. Have you taken a selfie on the koeksister bench? Send it to, tweet @traveller24_sa or tag traveller24_sa on Instagram
