Cape Town – There are few things we love more than a good message-in-a-bottle story here at Traveller24.

In fact, we love them so much, we recently put together a list of our top four of all time.

So, you can imagine our excitement when we spotted an article about two sisters from Brandfort in the Free State who received a reply to their messages all the way from Germany, seven months after they tossed them into the ocean at Ballito in KZN.

Netwerk24 reports that Elzette, 10, and Elmari Bezuidenhout, 13, were extremely excited about the postcard they received from a 25-year-old woman named Marie over the weekend.

On 8 October – the last day of their beach vacation - last year each of the girls wrote a letter, wrapped them in plastic, put them in a 2 litre cold drink bottle and sent it out to sea.

While they had hoped for a response, they thought it was the type of thing that only happened in books and movies.

So, the postcard they received all the way from Hamburg in Germany came as a pleasant surprise.

In their letters, they expressed their love for the ocean and asked the recipient to reply.

In her postcard response, Marie said she lived close to the North Sea and also loves the ocean, adding that she suspected South Africa was a little warmer than her native Germany.

Elmari and Elzette have already responded to Marie, telling her a bit more about South Africa in their follow-up letter.

According to Jone Porter from uShaka Marine World in Durban, the letter was probably taken along the coast of West Africa by the Agulhas current, past Ireland and England and finally deposited in Hamburg.
