Top airline, top airlines, World Travel Awards


Cape Town - As  Etihad Airways has once again collected the ‘World’s Leading Airline’ award at the 23rd annual World Travel Awards (WTA) Grand Final Gala Ceremony 2016 - marking the 8th consecutive year that the airline has received the prestigious accolade.

Etihad Airways also received the award for ‘World’s Leading First Class’.

The airline’s First Class service and hospitality offering has consistently been voted best in the world by leading publications, research consultancies and customer satisfaction surveys.

The World Travel Awards are considered the Oscars of the travel industry and hundreds of thousands of WTA voters, both from within the hospitality industry and among the public at large, cast more than 1.2 million votes during the Grand Tour 2016.

World's finest airline experience

The awards crown a momentous year for Etihad Airways, which has celebrated a series of significant milestones in its journey to become a world-leading provider of service and hospitality.

In recent years, the airline has also won numerous awards for its First Class, most recently receiving the World Travel Awards Middle East accolades for ‘Middle East’s Leading Airline - First Class’, and ‘Middle East's Leading Airport Lounge’ for its spectacular First Class Lounge & Spa at Abu Dhabi International Airport, adding to a long list of major global award wins.

Africa's leading airline

Kenya Airways has been named Africa's leading airline, snatching the title from South African Airways who had received it for the last 22 years.Kenya Airways was also voted as the African airline with the best business class offering.

Best in Economy and leader in low-cost carriers

Ethiopian Airlines was named best in Economy, while fastjet.com beat local low-cost carriers Mango and kulula as Africa's best low-cost carriers.

SAA voted as the 'Best Airline in Africa' for 2016

Another prestigious award in the industry comes from Skytrax World Airline Awards. SAA was crowned the overall best airline in Africa, while kulula and Mango placed in 7th and 8th places, respectively. This is the fourteenth consecutive year that South African Airways was named Best Airline in Africa.

Best airlines for in-flight entertainment

Emirates took the top spot for the 12th year running as the top airline in the inflight entertainment category. Airlines are rewarded based on the choice and currency of movies, TV programmes, music and games through and the availability and functionality of on-board wifi. The awards honour airlines for delivering a unique experience to their passengers.
