Last-minute flights: Here's what you can expect to pay if you're willing to fly on Christmas and New Years

Christmas is almost here and you've suddenly realised you've made absolutely no plans.

Maybe you want to see your family you haven't seen all year, or maybe you've seen too much of them and are looking for an escape from the madness.

If you're willing to fly on Christmas or New Years, these are what you can expect to pay.

Domestic Flights

CPT - JHB

Flying on the 25th your ticket will be around R580, and returning on New Year's Day will be around R780.

CPT - DRB

It would be just under a grand each way, although it's cheaper to fly on the 31st than 1 January.

JHB - CPT

Both ways would be just over a grand - with Cape Town as a destination the prices go up by a lot.

JHB - DRB

You'll pay around R480 for a Christmas flight and under R400 for a 1 January flight.

DRB - JHB

On 25 December a flight is under R400 and about R460 for either the 31st or for New Year's Day.

DRB - CPT

On both the day before and on Christmas Day a ticket will be over a grand, and it's cheaper to fly on the 31st for around R620.

Cross-border Escape

Cape Town to Walvis Bay

This is the best way to get to the African-German town of Swakopmund in Namibia, and for a two-hour return flight leaving on the 24th and coming back on the 31st is about R5 000.

Johannesburg to Victoria Falls

For just over R3 000 you can head to this iconic falls just as the rainy season starts if you fly on either the 24th or 25th and back on 31st or 1st.

Johannesburg to Maputo

You can land on the sunny beaches of Mozambique in an hour flying on Christmas and New Year's Day - or the day before either - for around R3 700.

Further abroad

Johannesburg to Zanzibar

You could take a longer break to the Tanzanian island by flying on the 18th and coming back on New Year's day for around R7 700 - but it won't be a direct flight.

Johannesburg to Lisbon

TAAG is running a special for flying on Christmas Eve to Lisbon, and coming back on 1 January will only cost you around R7 000 - but it will be a wintery Christmas.
