Cape Town - Inspired by a 15-hour flight from Los Angeles to New Zealand, a data scientist recently decided to map the longest non-stop flights around the world.
Seth Kadish plotted 20 altogether and found that a flight from Johannesburg to Atlanta is the second longest in the world. The 13 581km journey takes almost 17 hours to complete, which actually turns out to be about an hour-and-a-half longer than the number one route on the list, which is 13 804km between Sydney and Dallas.
While these figures may leave your knees aching and eyes turning red just at the thought, it turns out that they have a set of equal opposites in other corners of the world that are equally mind-boggling.
Since the longest flights in the world had gotten quite a lot of shine, Telegraph Travel decided to check out which flight routes are the shortest in the world.
The flights are mostly island-based, with French Polynesia, Greece and the Caribbean featuring quite heavily. And get this... Their combined distance is a meager 145km!

1. Westray - Papa Westray, Scotland
At just 2.7km, it is the shortest flight in the world. It can take as little as 47 seconds to fly, but Loganair, the carrier operating this route, works on an average of 2 mins.
2. Caye Chapel - Caye Caulker, Caribbean
Maya Island Air covers a distance of 3.9km in about 2 minutes
3. Karpathos - Kasos Island, Greece
The 19.3km trip operated by Olympic Air takes roughly 5 minutes to complete
4. Connemara - Inishmaan, Ireland
Aer Arann operates this 16km route in 6 minutes
5. Hoolehua - Kalaupapa, Hawaii
Covering 14.2km, Pacific Wings operates this route in 10 minutes
6. Saipan - Tinian, Northern Mariana Islands
Freedom Air takes about 10 minutes to complete this 17km journey
7. Cayman Brac - Little Cayman, Caribbean
Operated by Cayman Airways, the 19km route is normally completed in about 10 minutes
8. Minami-Daito - Kita-Daito, Japan
Covering just over 11km, this mini route is operated by Ryukyu Air Commuter and takes just over 15 minutes
9. Papeete - Moorea, French Polynesia
Air Tahiti flies this 17.7km route in about 15 minutes
10. Kos - Kalymnos, Greece
Greek carrier, Aegean Airlines operates this 22km route between two islands in about 20 minutes
