Cape Town - The Mother City might be stereotyped as SA's most laid-back city, but Cape Town is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to flight punctuality, as it placed top of all three of SA's airports for punctuality.

Johannesburg and Durban, however, weren't far behind.

New stats recently published by UK travel analysts OAG reveal that in 2016, 86.06% of the flights arriving or departing at Cape Town International Airport did so within 15 minutes of their scheduled time.

This ensured that Cape Town International raked in the highest rating of all SA airports and featured sixth on OAG's global medium airport punctuality list.

Durban's King Shaka International airport came in close second place for the most punctual airport in SA with a remarkable 86.03% achievement.

Durban ranked 10th in the world on OAG's small airport punctuality list.

OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg again featured as the third most punctual airport in SA with 84.32% and features in eight position globally on OAG's large airport punctuality list.

The most punctual major airport on the globe for the second year in a row is Tokyo Haneda, with an 87.49% achievement. Tokyo Haneda features in on OAG's most punctual major airports list.

For airline punctuality, Hawaiian Airlines has the best timekeeping in the world, while the flag carriers of Panama and the Netherlands, Copa Airlines and KLM, placed second and third as the most punctual airlines in the world.

Australian carrier Qantas placed fourth place.

OAG has crunched the figures from around 54 million flight records using full-year data from 2016 - the largest ever number of flights that it's tracked in a single year.
