Cape Town - A 4x4 trek along deep sand tracks through the vast expanse of the world's largest continuous sand mass - the Kalahari is one heck of an adventure.

It takes meticulous planning and an excellent support team, which sees aspiring bushwhackers putting in months of prep in order to check this Southern African trip off their adventure list.

Fortunately the team at Bhejane Adventures are experienced hands when it comes to exploring parts of the "four-million hectare "Mabenyan" or Jewel of the Kalahari concession area".

But a recent tour on the so-called Highwayman's adventure route dished up something even the experienced Bhejane guides were blown away by.

A pride of lions had wandered into the midst of their camp to get a drink of water and they managed to capture it on camera, sharing the footage to Instagram and Facebook.

"The lions entered our camps early in the morning. Lions  in the Kalahari will drink any water they can. Even if a bucket in the camp has a bit of dew in it," says Frank Carlisle of Bhejane Adventures.

So what can you expect on an adventure like this?

Bring your camera as you hit the Highwayman's Adventure Route and 'shoot' a lion. You'll be tracking these animals with Bushman trackers in an area twice the size of the Kruger National Park.

Our journey takes us into Jewel of the Kalahari concession area in Botswana and, if that is not enough, we then enter Mabuasehube and Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.

Towards the end of summer, presuming reasonable rains have fallen in the area, the Kgalagadi is noted for its large number of resident eagles, such as the Martial, Tawny, Black Breasted, Snake and Bateleur. These are joined in February and March by the migrant raptors, the Booted Eagle and Steppe Buzzard, and the rare Lesser Spotted Eagle. We hope to be there when the numbers of eagles will be at their highest. However, we must not forget all the other wildlife we expect to see in the harsh but magnificent Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.

NB: Please note that this is a true adventure safari as we will be bush camping almost every night. However, the Bhejane crew will make it as comfortable as possible.
