The most reviewed destinations on TripAdvisor in 2017

Cape Town - With the year 2017 dubbed as one of the best years for travelling, the global travel website, TripAdvisor has revealed the most reviewed destinations, hotels and attractions of this year, racking up the highest number of ratings. 

TripAdvisor receives million of reviews every year, for everything from tourist attractions and restaurants to entire countries. 

And this year, the website celebrated the publication of its 500millionth review and reckoned that each reviewer made, on average, three submissions.

According to its data, London was the most reviewed city in the world, despite not being the most-visited as that went to Bangkok. 

The UK capital won the top spot when it came to the largest number of reviews, including both positive and negative feedback.

London Eye was the most-reviewed attraction (according to 54% of users), while the restaurant with the highest number of contributions was the South African restaurant, Shaka Zulu in Camden, London - the city’s largest South African restaurant.

The most-reviewed tourist attraction went to the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, which received 30 000 reviews from tourists while the most-booked attraction through the site was the Harry Potter tour at the Warner Bros Studio in Watford, and the most-booked hotel was the Ibis on Brick Lane, Whitechapel.

The Hard Rock Hotel in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, received more reviews than any other hotel in the world and, according to reviews, "this place rocks", while the Boston Park Plaza in Massachusetts was the most-booked hotel.

The review website says most reviews came from the Japanese nationality as they were the most prolific users, submitting more opinions than any other nationality, while British users added more reviews on one day of the year - February 14 - than any other 24-hour period.

The Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, was the attraction booked most through TripAdvisor, while Lisbon’s Pasteis de Belem, renowned for its glorious custard tarts, was the most-reviewed eatery, with more than 10 000 ratings. 

Although none of SA's attractions in the county got a nod or two, it still boasts some of the greatest cities on Earth.
