The world of digital video and content creation has received an hour-long play boost from instant photo and video sharing social media giant, Instagram.
Launched in San Francisco last week, the app says this new feature will allow creators, that includes you, to upload video that is longer than one-minute and limited to one hour.
Along with the exciting feature update, Instagram also confirmed it is now a global community of one billion.
"Since our launch in 2010, we’ve watched with amazement as the community has flourished and grown. This is a major accomplishment — so from all of us at Instagram, thank you!" says Kevin Systrom, Co-Founder & CEO.
What is IGTV?
It's a new app for watching long-form, vertical video - with the new video format specifically made for mobile. While there’s a stand-alone IGTV app, you’ll also be able to watch from within the Instagram app so the entire community of one billion can use it from the very start, says Instagram.

What makes IGTV different from the likes of YouTube or Video channels on Facebook?
Most importantly to note - it’s built for how you actually use your phone. Videos are full screen and vertical - not landscape - with a minimum aspect ratio of 4:5 and maximum of 9:16. If you try plugging in videos not filmed in this format, it really makes for a crappy video experience. Considering that 40% more of the App audience is switched on to its former 1-minute-long video formats - execution is going to have to be killer to earn a decent following.
"We’ve made it simple, too," says Instagram.
"Just like turning on the TV, IGTV starts playing as soon as you open the app. You don’t have to search to start watching content from people you already follow on Instagram and others you might like based on your interests. You can swipe up to discover more — switch between 'For You', 'Following', 'Popular' and 'Continue Watching'."
The app also allows you to like, comment and send videos to friends in Direct. Nice!
Also like TV, IGTV has channels.
In IGTV, the creators are the channels. When you follow a creator on Instagram, their IGTV channel will show up for you to watch.
"Anyone can be a creator. Instagram has always been a place to connect with the people who inspire, educate and entertain you every day. With your help, IGTV begins a new chapter of video on Instagram. We hope it brings you closer to the people and things you love."
To create your own channel, download the app. IGTV has been rolled out globally across Android and iOS.
From the Instagram app or IGTV app you can then tap in the top right of your Feed, or open the IGTV app. An IGTV icon is added automatically, as it links to your main Instagram account as soon as you upload your first video.
- Anybody can be a creator but there are a few limitations to keep in mind
While Insta-stories offer a host of emojis, filters and clickable hashtags - the upload to IGTV is extremely basic, with not post-production options - meaning that your clips need to be audience ready.
- Your video must be minimum of 15-seconds long.
- Videos must be in MP4 file format.
- During the roll-out phase certain accounts will be limited to 10-minutes long video uploads.
- There are size limits. Videos that are 10 minutes or less are allowed a maximum at 650MB. Videos up to 60 minutes should be a maximum size of 5.4GB.
- You can upload directly from your phone or via the Instagram Web app - with a new IGTV tab and upload button visible just beneath your profile description.
- You can add a title and description to your upload, as well as select the cover shot from your images or directly from the video itself.
- You can only upload with the sound on.
- IGTV only allows you to share to Facebook.
