Cape Town and its surrounding beaches will be packed this holiday season, no doubt.

Although the tourists probably won’t know of these 7 Secret beaches in Cape Town, chances are that ever the most secluded of beaches will have a few more guests that usual over the holidays.

If you’re after some peace and quiet while in the Cape, why not take a drive up the iconic Weskus and explore the secret beach spots there?

While some lie a good few hundred kilometres out, others are as near as 25km from the Cape Town city centre…

Here are 7 of our favourite secret beaches along the West Coast:

1. Haakgat

We love this beach because it’s only 25km outside Cape Town. The ever-popular Blouberg beach attracts most visitors, leaving this nearby spot calm and quiet for most of the year. Surfers love the spot, but only when the waves are big.

2. Elands Bay

This beach is also a big hit with surfers, but if you go on a day when the swell is low, you’ll have the place all to yourself.

3. Jacobs Bay Beach

Picture the perfect, typical Weskus beach… This is it. The white limestone houses sit right on the sand, and in the early mornings the fishermen go out from the beach to bring back the freshest catch of the day. This beach is super romantic, and perfect for long walks.

4. Stompneus Bay Beach

Stompneus Bay Beach is on the eastern side of Shelley Bay, characterised by little coves of alternating rock and sand. Whales and dolphins and even the rare Heaviside's Dolphin, only found off the coast of Namibia and South Africa's West Coast, can be spotted here.

5. Preekstoel Beach

This beach lies in the West Coast National Park, which already makes it a little more exclusive than the other West Coast beaches. The 25km stretch of sand also boasts a rusted shipwreck. Fun!

6. Shelley Bay Beach

Shelley Bay Beach is named for the many beach pebbles and shells that lie scattered about. Because there’s not only sand, people think the beach won’t be as pleasant as other more popular beaches… but they’re wrong.

7. Doringbaai Beach

We love this beach for its romantic feel and, obviously, the lighthouse. The beach is mainly occupied by locals, which makes it the ultimate Weskus spot. There is also a crayfish factory nearby.
