In terms of visas, you need to apply for your Vietnam visa-on-arrival BEFORE you get to the airport counter in Vietnam, to avoid a lengthy immigration process.
You can either do so through the Vietnamese Embassy in SA, or directly via the Vietnam Governmental website online. This will cost about $17 or R230 and takes a minimum of 2 days. Once you get to immigration in Vietnam, you will need the pre-approved paperwork, correct photographs and another $25 or about R335 to pay for the actual visa-on-arrival before getting the stamp in your passport.
Once you have the stamp of approval, you can head out exploring.
