Cape Town - Heritage Day or better known as 'National braai day' is a day to celebrate the rainbow nation, in all its diversity and vibrancy.  In the mix is a long weekend this up coming heritage day and we have the ideal event plan list for you. 

These events are for the whole family - spend the weekend with your friends and family. 

Where will you be heading this Heritage weekend from the 22 - 25 September?


The city of gold is going all out for the heritage long weekend - with a selection of events to remind you of your roots and celebrate the diversity of South Africa. Explore Jozi this weekend and embrace the local culture and vibrance. 

1. Corona Sunsets session 

The start to the Corona season begins on Heritage Day - featuring performances by Abby Nurock and Kyle Worde. Party up a storm and enjoy the long weekend with some good tunes. 

Venue: Billy the bums

Time: 18:00 - 02:00

Cost: Entrance is FREE.

2. Lets play outside festival 2017

A street music festival with fresh and upcoming local artists, delicious food vendors and workshops. Tickets for this exclusive event can be purchased here. 

Venue: Neighbourgoods Market

Date: 25 September

Time: 11:00 - 21:00

Cost: R 250 per person

3. Heritage day celebration 

Send your tastebuds on an African ride at the AfriPopMarts Heritage Day function - offering African food dishes ranging from Nigerian to Ghanaian. Tickets for the African feast can be purchased here and includes a variety of five African dishes. 

Venue: Constitution Hill

Date: 24 September

Time: 13:00 - 17:00

Cost:  R200 per person. 

4. Ekasi Braai Festival 

A lekker braai on Heritage Day is always a perfect idea - the Ekasi festival has the best in braai meat, craft beer, live music and a kids' play area. It is an event for the whole family. Tickets can be purchased here.

Venue: Esibayeni Butchery and Shisanyama

Date: 24 September 

Time: 12:00 - 22:00

Cost: Tickets prices still to be released.

5. River Jazz festival 

For the ultimate jazz festival in SA - these local jazz musicians will keep you on your feet all night long with their tunes. Tickets can be purchased here

Venue: Dickinson Park 

Date: 23 - 24 September

Time: 12:00 - 02:00

Cost:  R200 for general entrance, R 1000 VIP ticket

6. Okapi fun day 4th birthday edition

A fun day that is filled with live music, food, dance and craft beer -  it is an interactive day for all. No under 18s are allowed and tickets can be purchased here

Venue: Turffontein Racecourse 

Date: 24 September 

Time: 12:00 - 22:00

Cost: R 150 per person

7. Shades on the Lawn

Spend the day doing what South African's do best - hanging out in the garden, while the meat sizzles on the braai with a cold one in hand. Shades on the lawn invites you to bring your potjie pots and thongs along with for a jol. There will be outdoor acoustic music playing the whole day.

Date: 24 September 

Time: 12:00 - 24:00

Cost: R 40 per person

8. Earthdance 

Stomp it out into the heritage weekend at Earthdance - with a magical line-up of music. Tickets can be purchased here

Venue: The Moors castle 

Date: 22 - 24 September

Time: 16:00 onward

Cost: R 320 per person, final stage tickets.

9. Soweto Heritage Festival

Celebrating the vibey, authentic heritage of Soweto with a showcase of traditional dances, music and food. 

Venue: Jabulani Amphitheatre, Soweto Theatre.

Date:  23- 24 September 

Time: 08:00 - 17:00

Cost: Entrance is FREE, collect free tickets from Soweto theatre or Jozi FM

10. El Momento Heritage Day

Hosted by El momento and Lekker places - this is a must-attend event on Heritage Day. There will be a wide range of activities from picnic spots to live music on the pool deck. Tickets can be purchased here

Venue: Ramkietjie Country Inn & Restaurant, Weddings & Conferences

Date: 24 - 25 September

Time: 11:00 - 02:00

Cost: R 150 per adult all access pass, R 50 kids under 17 years.

11. Sun City Heritage day 

Sun City is going all out for this year's heritage celebrations as they have a joyous line up of events. There will be authentic South African food, comedy by Barry Hilton, culture and music on show at the festivities. The thrilling water rides will keep you in high spirits as you celebrate South Africa.

Venue: Sun City 

Date: 23 - 24 September 

Time: 11:00 - 18:00

Cost:  Day visitors pay R 75 per adult, R 65 for children 2 - 12 years

12. Gauteng Getaway show 2017 

Join in the braai or potjie competition being held during  Heritage Weekend and display your masterchef South African talents.

Venue: Ticket Pro dome, Northriding. 

Date: 23 - 25 September

Time: varies depending on day 23 - 24 09:00 - 18:00 and 25 September 09:00 - 16:00

Cost: R 80 per adults and kids under 12 are free
