When a Castle or a Windhoek isn't enough to satisfy your beer cravings, we are lucky enough to have access to a growing craft beer industry that will make you spoilt for choice - if you find yourself in a province with a healthy brewing scene that is.

The golden veins of the craft brew are slowly inching its way to other provinces from the meccas of Western Cape and Gauteng, with small microbreweries popping up in the local pub or a wine farm branching out to reel in the non-grape lovers. One day hopefully you'll be able to order a home-brew in every pub across the country

Many travel to the Cape winelands specifically to taste their way through their vineyards, so why wouldn't you travel to hop your way through Limpopo and Mpumalanga's independent brew scene?

Just don't try to order a Hansa at these craft breweries or you might make a brewmaster cry.

Sabie Brewing Co

Housed in a heritage building near the Sabie River where it gets its water from, this brewery named its beers after historic figures in the area, like the Glynn's Gold London Ale, named after the man who discovered gold. Other beers include Long Tom Lager Dunkel, Wheelbarrow Weiss, Shangaan Stout, Dravidian Draught IPA, the cider Monkey Apple Ale and the Cockney Liz - a wildcard beer.

Hops Hollow

With a view of the Drakensberg from Long Tom Pass, Hops Hollow likes their beer au naturale with each batch tasting a little different. Their beers include the Diggers Draught Kölsch style ale, Blacksmith's Brew Belgian white ale, Mac's Porter, Old Bull Bitter and the Tapper's Brew bohemian pilsner.

Anvil Ale Brewpub

On the edge of Dullstroom, this brewery was started by Theo de Beer who learnt his skills from Hops Hollow. They only produce a thousand litres, and the European-style beers include a blonde ale, pale ale, Biere d'Saison, White Anvil Belgian, Black Anvil stout and Mjölnir American IPA.

L'Abri Fountain Brewery

About 37km from Bela-Bela, the L'Abri farm wants to welcome the common folk to their hearth - "you will need a beer for every social level that you are above us before you will fit in" - and their beers are named after animals. Their regular beers include the Bunny Beer blond ale, Beertjie Beer bitter, Skilpad English brown ale, Wit Hassie witbier and one of their special beers include the Party Beer - light in alcohol for hot summer days.

Zwakala Brewery

Zwakala means 'come close', and you'll want to get closer to the only other brewery in Limpopo. Overlooking the Wolkberg Mountains in Magoebaskloof, their three-beer range includes a Naked Ale, Limpopo Lager and Mountain Weiss, while their seasonal collaborations have seen fusions like the Weekend Special lemongrass white IPA, Ginger Weiss and the Pantsula Hop ale.
