Street art is a language the Mother City is well versed in. Murals tattoo her flesh from the infrastructure near her lionness head to the ones that hug the valleys of the streets in her Flats.

Salt River is one such area that features a gallery of mesmerising artworks that add pops of colour and demand recognition and emotion from each passerby.

Walking through the streets you will be inundated with the sheer amount of graffiti pieces you'll find speckled along the way and if you aren't careful - you might just miss one.

From three-storey-large murals to a simple doodle on the sidewalk - the area bursts with unrestrained creativity and beauty.

The recent installation to Harrington Street - dubbed to be the largest public art mural in the Cape with a surface area of about 400-square-metres - is set to be the billboard for the 2019 edition of the International Public Art Festival (IPAF)

The piece by Belgian street artist, Bart Smeets (aka Smates) depicts a dog in an pilot helmet and goggles with a jet plane flying out of one of the goggle lenses. The mural falls in line with IPAF's theme for 2019's event - 'Generation Next: Educate, Collaborate, Empower'.

The IPAF will be ringing in its third year running in 2019 and is run and organised by the NGO BAZ-ART. Each year a variety of street artists - local and international - gather to produce some really stunning works to add to the tattooed skin of the Cape's Salt River streets.

The festival and organisation work closely with the city and the residents of the area to secure the needed permission for the chosen venue or wall to host the next masterful mural.

Last year's IPAF theme was 'Nature doesn't need us, We need nature' and it had been echoed through the works created all around the area - with many artists incorporating nature's many themes and elements into their pieces.
