McCloy shared three key safety tips for sea kayaking:

  • Always go in groups of at least three people. You need to know how to get back into your boat or get other people back into their boats as getting out of the water, should you flip over or fall out, is crucially important. Especially during surprise spottings of whales that come up to the boat, sporadic icebergs that chip off and tidal waves that could make an appearance.
  • Always dress for the conditions. You've gotta make sure you don't get burnt while being out in the sun that long - so sunscreen and a sun hat are important and key to have on you.
  • Alert the whales beneath you. If one pops up beneath your kayak, tap the side of your kayak with your paddle to let them know that you're there.
