Cape Town - We're a little taken aback because a list of the world's friendliest cities, according to Condé Nast Traveler has been announced, placing Charleston, South Carolina in the US at the top of the broad-grinned cities globally.
Charleston sounds great. But judging by the lack of SA cities in the round-up, the Condé Nast guys clearly forgot to include South African tourists in their Readers’ Choice Awards survey.
I mean, have you been to Durban lately? Or walked down Kloof street in Cape Town recently. Have you visited an inner-city market in Jozi? And Port Elizabeth?! PE is nicknamed the friendly city for heaven's sake!
For us, and many visitors to the country, South Africans are some of the friendliest people on the globe regardless of where they rank in Condé Nast's list.
Earlier in August, for example, Cape Town was listed as one of the Top 5 gay friendly travel destinations in the world. How's that for being friendly!?
This accolade follows a myriad of other awards, like Durban's inclusion in the world's best street food destinations by CNN, and Cape Town ranking as the 10th best city globally by Travel + Leisure in New York.
It's not only Condé Nast who forgot to add SA to their list. In a recent National Geographic Travel list, SA is also omitted from the Top 10 Happiest Countries in the World.
For NatGeo, Denmark, Switzerland and Iceland ranks as the Top 3 happiest countries, respectively.
For the third year running, Condé Nast asked their readers to rate "friendliness" in the cities they've visited. On both sides of the spectrum, US cities feature as being both the friendliest and unfriendliest places.
Here are the Top 5 friendliest, and unfriendliest cities on the globe according to Condé Nast.
1. Charleston, South Carolina, US
2. Sydney, Australia
3. Dublin, Ireland
4. Queenstown, New Zealand
5. Park City, Utah, US
The Top 5 Unfriendliest Cities globally:
5. Atlantic City, New Jersey, US
4. Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
3. Oakland, California, US
2. Tijuana, Mexico
1. Newark, New Jersey, US
