Solo travel to Joburg explodes by 135% - Airbnb

Cape Town - If you're looking for the best solo travel experience in SA, then Johannesburg is said to be the local city of choice.

At least that's according to Online booking platform Airbnb. It placed SA's largest city and one of the 50 largest urban areas in the world, 5th on the list of hottest solo travel destinations - with Airbnb data on solo bookings in the city showing an increase of 135% in the past year.

Whether it’s a short business trip or an extended solitary adventure, more travellers are flying solo than ever before, says Airbnb.

Top cities for solo travel also include destinations like Buenos Aires, Toronto and Oslo – anywhere from "14% to 27% of all bookings are made by solo travellers".

While caution is always advised when travelling alone, the company attributes its the launch of Airbnb Experiencces to making it easier than ever before for solo adventurers to navigate a new destination with the help of knowledgeable locals.

"In top overall cities for solo travellers, more travellers are booking Experiences as a way to meet locals and fellow travellers, all while learning a skill, enjoying a meal, or partaking in a unique cultural experience." 

"Making a solo trek can be an empowering and exhilarating experience, helping travellers to push their limits and see the world in a whole new way." And it couldn't be truer for Jozi.

Joburg is definitely a city that doesn't sleep, with stops in the buzzy Maboneng Precinct and Parkhurst just some of the inclusions for a solo-trip itinerary, according to Joburg Tourism.

"Jozi offers experiences as unique and diverse as the city itself. Whether you are on business, in search of a cultural encounter, an adrenaline rush or simply want to relax and unwind for a few days, the city of Johannesburg has everything you’re looking for and more." 

And it certainly does help that Airbnb in Johannesburg is very affordable. You can rent an entire apartment or house for under R1 000 a night, in suburbs like Linden, Parkhurst or Bryanston.
