Cape Town - Close your eyes. Picture Africa. What do you see?

Elephants on the horizon in front of a setting sun? Hungry children with runny noses and protruding tummies? United Nations volunteers offering relief aid to famine-stricken villages? Wealthy corrupt leaders with many wives?

Africa might be this to some people... But it's also so much more, as the #TheAfricaTheMediaNeverShowsYou social media campaign clearly shows.

In response to the oversimplification of the multi-faceted African identity, and the oversimplification of the roots of poverty in some nations, Africans have taken to social media to show the diversity of the continent.

The movement kicked off in 2015 already, and has since been used on all social media platforms to introduce a more real image of 'The Dark Continent'.
