With spring around the corner there is more than one reason to get out and enjoy the sunshine, to chase the 'rays' and most importantly a time to bond with those we love. Whether we head to the beach or for a full day of hiking adventure - spring ignites the adventurer in all of us

The outdoors has never been more appealing than in spring - when the flowers bloom and the birds start chirping. South Africans live for the summer and love a good outdoor braai or picnic. The time-old tradition of family picnics has been around for years and leaves us with a long for summer is undeniable. 

Best picnic spots across SA

We have come up with the perfect picnic spots for you this Spring - the perfect reason to spend the day outdoors. 

Cape Town

1. Kirstenbosch

Set against the Eastern slopes of Table mountain - with its diverse flora and beautifully greenery, it is the ideal picnic spot in Cape Town. Throw your picnic blanket out on the grass and enjoy the beautiful views of the grounds. As the temperature heats up - you can look forward to the summer concerts held at the gardens. Tickets can be purchased here or upon arrival. 

Times: 08:00 - 19:00

Cost: Entrance is  R 60 per adult and R 15 per child (6 -17 years)

2. Boschendal Wine Farm 

Nestled between Franschhoek and Stellenbosch it is the perfect destination for a picnic. The wine estate offers two picnic basket choices to choose from. The Rhone picnic is set on the Rhone estate of the winery where a table can be be decked for you and your friends. The second option is more casual and is the Werf garden picnic that occurs on the Pavilion lawn. It is a more relaxed setting and kid-friendly. 

Times: Up until the 16 September 2017 open from Saturday - Sunday, Wednesday - Sunday from 1 October. Picnic collection is from 12:00 - 14:00

3. Table Mountain National Park's Silvermine 

A wonderful picnic on the shores of its beautiful reservoir -the sun and water will have you wanting to take a dip into the waters to experience all that the nature reserve has to offer. There are many other activities to take part in at the reserve, from bird watching to mountain biking. There is also a hiking trail towards the reservoir. 

Times: 07:00 - 18:00

Cost: R 45 per adult, R 25 per child (under the age of 12)

Jozi

1. Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens 

Many visitors to the gardens flock to the iconic waterfall but the park has so much to offer from its beautiful flora to the ideal picnic spots. Known as the 'Rocky Highveld grasslands' it is destination for the whole family. 

Times: 08:00 - 17:00

Cost: R 45 per adult, R 15 per scholar and free for children under the age of 6 years.

2. Emmarentia Botanical Gardens 

It is known for the beautiful dam as well as is the most popular park in Joburg. Visitors are able to hire out paddle boats to experience the natural gardens out on the water.

3. Walkhaven 

For those that love to head outdoors and experience a picnic with their furry best friends - this is the picnic park for you. Dog lovers are encouraged to bring out their best friends for a day in the sun. 

Times: 07:00 - 18:30

Cost: R 20 per adult and R 20 per child

Durban

1. Durban National Botanical Gardens

The cascading giant trees will leave you in awe and is the perfect spot to lay out your picnic blanket under its shade and wonder. The gardens host various live concerts within its gardens - you can enjoy the picturesque background with some amazing local musical performances. 

Times: 16 September onward 07:30 - 17:15

2. Paradise Valley Nature Reserve 

It boasts two magnificent waterfalls  - viewed just off the Duiker trail and is known as the Umbilo waterworks. Enjoy a braai and picnic along the river bank - basking in the sun and cheerful nature surrounds. 

Time: 07:30 - 16:00

Cost: R 13 per adult, R 10 (under the age of 15)

3. New Germany Nature Reserve 

A cultivating land for all types of birds and wild flora. The scenery sets the scene for the ideal spring day adventure and picnic, enjoy a brisk walk through the magical gardens and the paths. 

Time: 07:30 - 17:00

Cost: Free entrance
