After working hard throughout the year, a little break is needed but unfortunately making plans for the summer can leave you feeling frustrated because well everything is expensive.
Cheap fun does not mean, you won't have a good time, actually, there are a lot of great activities for you and your family that won't see you reaching into your rainy-day-fund.
Here's a list of 10 free things to do in this capital city:
1. Picnic at the Union Buildings
The Union Buildings is a heritage landmark and also houses offices of the president of the country. One of the most recognisable buildings in Pretoria is surrounded by a well-manicured garden that plays host to a lot of family picnics, it is also famous for being a venue for wedding photographs, careful you don't end up as a photobomber in one of the pictures.
2. Birdwatch at Austin Roberts Bird Sanctuary
Engage with some birds while you are enjoying a Sunday afternoon stroll with the family. The sanctuary often attracts blue crane, grey crowned crane, rock doves, speckled pigeons and the odd Egyptian goose, that all feed regularly here. Apart from the beautiful scenery, the park also has a bird hide, it offers guided walks as well as an exhibition hall.

3. Take a stroll through Pretoria National Botanic Garden
South Africa has plenty of botanic gardens but not all of them are a hot spot for birds-over 220 bird species have been listed, including hawks, falcons, kestrels and even Verreaux's Eagle. Spend your Saturday familiarising yourself with indigenous plant species, some have medicinal properties. Admission is free on Tuesday.
If you are willing to spend a few cents, pick up something to read at the bookstore in the South African National Biodiversity Institute building.
4. Learn about science at Sci-Enza
Put your science hat on and discover the mysteries of life with interactive exhibits. Camera obscura allows you to see the city at a different perspective and through a tiny hole, it is hard to believe your eyes. Bring friends, family or even celebrate your birthday surrounded by animal skeletons.

5. Take a picture next to the Nelson Mandela statue
The Nelson Mandela statue attracts many tourists to the city of Tshwane, why not join in and take a picture with the larger than life bronze sculpture.
