The 12 South African restaurants ranked on 1000 best in the world list

The thousand best restaurants in the world have been revealed, and South Africa's top-notch culinary royalty snagged 12 spots on the prestigious list. 

La Liste has been around for four years, created as a 'more scientific' rival to the British-based 50 Best ranking.

The number one spot was shared by four restaurants, with two surprise Japanese restaurants - Ryugin and Sugabalo - shooting up the rankings in one shot. The other two more predictable top restaurants are Guy Savoy in Paris and Le Bernardin in New York.

The top South African restaurant was the famous Test Kitchen from Cape Town for its gastronomic experiments.

Half of the local restaurants hailed from the Mother City, alongside two from Stellenbosch, one from Johannesburg, one from Pretoria and Wolfgat from Paternoster - the small seaside establishment that made a big splash earlier this year when its chef won Restaurant of the Year at the World Restaurant Awards.

Only two other African restaurants made it onto the list - Kook in Angola for its ever-changing seafood menu and NOK by Alara in Nigeria's Lagos, an uber-modern nook inside a garden focused on African delights.

South Africa ranked 20th for most awarded countries, which was headed by Japan, closely followed by China, France and the US. 

La Liste ranks its restaurants by aggregating guidebooks trusted by chefs and millions of online reviews.
