Cabin in the woods? Don't worry, these wooden cabins aren't creepy

A cabin in the woods or on a hillside overlooking a valley has always gotten a pretty bad wrap. Mainly because of psychological thrillers set in isolated places and spaces far removed from society.

However, living in a city can be draining in all sorts of ways: the traffic, the noise, the over-crowding, and not to mention all the options at your disposal every day (I know, not a glaring negative).

Get away from all the choices and all the things that over-stimulate you on a daily basis - and go back to the basics.

The Western Cape has some exceptional options when it comes to cabin-ing. Here are a few areas to head to on your next short break:

Secret Falls camping and hiking in Tulbagh

Looks like a cabin, makes like a kitchen/bathroom for hikers. This one was just too good to exclude. Head to this neck of the woods for an adrenaline-fuelled weekend away. Hike, bike or just chill out. You can camp or stay at one of the cottages for a more comfy sleep.

Bainskloof Pass

Drop everything and head to the regional road between Wellington and Ceres for a fix of fantasy-like scenery as the landscape offer you all the blues, greens and rocky twists your heart might desire.

Zielenrust in Patatskloof has cabins that offer spectacular views. Sitting on the foothills of the Hawequa mountains, it's one to consider this year!

Home to the annual Harvest Festival, Beards and Barrels, Botrivier is the Overberg's wine hub. Go off-the-grid and stay at Copia Eco Cabins. Running solely on solar electricity, this is a city-slicker's ideal getaway destination.

Klein Karoo

Cabine du Cap is in Montagu, and redefines luxury. Another off-the-grid cabin with deluxe safari tent (2-6 guests + kids), this nature space is just 2,5 hours from Cape Town. It is fully staffed, which means you literally won't have to lift a single finger throughout the weekend.
