6 Best drive-in cinemas and outdoor film fests in SA

Are you always rushing to the movie house only to find that the tickets are sold out for the movie you had planned on watching? Or finding out that your favourite seasoning is no longer stocked? 

You can now watch films in the comfort of your own car or seated comfortably on the sand. You can even bring your own snacks, with your favourite seasoning, and drinks.  

1. Galileo open air cinema

Whether it is with the V&A Waterfront as your backdrop, the comfy lawn of the Kirstenbosch gardens, mountain range of the Hillcrest Quarry or amongst the vineyards of the Cape Winelands. This open-air cinema offers you a romantic escape from the normal movie house setting.

The cinema will be opening again as of the 1st of October and ticket prices range from R70, for a standard ticket, and R95 for the more luxurious seating.

2. Wavescape Surf Film Festival 

This film festival is aimed to educate and entertain all those beach bums out there. It screens films about the surfing and ocean culture. 

The festival ran throughout July in Durban and will be starting again this December in Cape Town. 
Some of their screenings are free of charge, however most are at a cost of R40 to plant your bum in the sand with a warm bowl of popcorn.

3. The Bioscope

This quaint cinema situated on The Alexander Theatre Rooftop in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, shows films from all around the World. They try to show films that highlight issues such as addiction, substance abuse and mental health. 

Tickets are R180 and include bottomless popcorn and a welcome cocktail.

4.Short & Sweet

This movement was aimed at educating and inspiring through the art of short films. There are screenings all year round. Most short films are screened in Cape Town at the Drive-In of the Good Hope seminary junior school. There will also be some screenings at the Monte Casino Drive-In in Johannesburg. 

Tickets are R150 from Quicket and R170 if you pay using SnapScan at the door.

5. Spier Drive-In

Located on the beautiful Spier Wine Farm. This is the perfect location for a starry, romantic date. 
Tickets are R250 per car and screenings start at 19:00.

6. 5 Ryneveld 

This is not your usual restaurant. 5 Ryneveld has film screenings every Monday and Thursday. The films all start at 20:00 and tickets are only R25 per person. 

The cinema is located at the restaurant that is in Stellenbosch.
