Cape Town - Spring is at our door and there couldn't be a better time for an environmentally-friendly road trip up the West Coast.
CapeNature has just announced the addition of four new eco-cabins, north along the West Coast. Enjoy the change of season at Rocherpan’s Nature Reserve, initially launched in 2012, which now has eight of these solar-powered cabins and eco-friendly waterless toilets.
The reserve, with its array of wildflowers and beautiful birds is situated adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean and draws hundreds of local and international visitors to the area every year - which means it is perfectly suited to bird watching, fishing, braaing and swimming along a private beach. There are also broad wooden boardwalks leading up to and between the cabins, for easy wheelchair access and mobility.
According to Cape Nature, the new cabins - Coot, Moorhen, Egret, and Shoveler - are named after birds which you are very likely to see in this area. The reserve is also home to one of the largest populations of the Cape Shoveler, according to Cape Nature. So be sure to make use of the new bird hide, which allows you to see these fascinating creatures in their natural element.
There you have it. Go and enjoy some of the Western Cape's efforts at creating environmentally friendly change in South Africa!
