To most outsiders, Japan has a reputation of being a little crazy. weird game shows and the obsession with anime and manga, every type of themed restaurant you can imagine - there are endless reasons to check out Japan.

From strange rides on melting rabbits covered in custard to dildo bars to a psychedelic cafe, there is no shortage of entertainment options to cater to the wildest and most outrageous whims.

The Vibe Bar is a bar literally filled with dildos and vibrators. One enters the bar through a giant vagina-shaped doorway into a space that has a soft amber glow. As to why the place exists at all, well in Japan there is the concept that speaks of an inner and outer world. There is a division between the way people see you, the way you present yourself to your co-workers, friends and family which can be seen as part of the outer world. The Vibe Bar is thus clearly an expression of the inner world and the distinction between the two.

The Japanese are known to be polite and sincere so to some extent this eccentricity and quirkiness is a form of release.

Another place where this sexual quirkiness is exhibited is at a dimly lit, neon-coloured love hotel. With a doctor's office type room serving up some medical sexual fantasy, this space caters to every sexual proclivity. The whole design and ethos of the Love Hotel is based on the idea that you won't encounter anyone in a city where space is limited and encounters are all but guaranteed.

In the hotel, you can order up an assortment of outfits, or cosplay, and you can pick them up from a counter where you and the server are unable to see each other due to frosted glass.

Perhaps you're looking to enjoy something of a less overt sexual nature, in that case, it is worth checking out the Robot Restaurant. Weird, psychedelic and pretty intense, it is a confusing place described as being somewhere between a roller-derby and a daft punk music video set that can be overwhelming to the senses - in a good way if you're into that type of thing.

Japan is just a must-visit destination and Tokyo, of course, is the epicentre of all things Japanese. Of course, when you go there you want to do the cliche stuff because you want to experience the cute and wacko but so quickly you come to realise that there is so much more to this place.
