There was a large influx of German expatriates into Brazil generations ago, and in the process created a very German city in the south of Brazil.

Blumenau has a rich Oktoberfest tradition, the country's biggest folk festival after the Rio Carnival.

If you dress up in traditional German outfits, you might even get in for free.

How do you get to Blumenau

The best way to get to Blumenau is via bus from the main cities - from São Paulo it will take 10 hours via one of the interstate companies. 

Brazil is also visa-free for South Africans.
