The 2017 World Economic Forum listed Kigali in Rwanda as the safest African city. Tangiers in Morocco came in second.

Yet earlier this year Forbes published a list of the 10 new coolest cities to visit. Surprisingly Brazzaville in Congo made the list. And mainly because of its safety.

Despite the country's tumultuous history, Brazzaville, is on the rise.

Dubbed 'The Paris of Africa', the French Colonial city is perched calmly on the opposite river bank to the DRC’s bustling urban metropolis, Kinshasa.

Now hailed as one of the safest cities in Africa, and notably one of the safer African capitals, it is much calmer compared to other African city hubs like Lagos and Johannesburg, and has a lot to offer.

Forbes notes that it has an array of cool eateries, architecture and things to do; making it much more than just a stop-over. Streets are clean and impeccably organised according to tour operator Black Tomato.

Forbes says to check out the Basilique Sainte-Anne. Apparently, best seen at around 5pm when locals flood the church with vibrant colour as people gather for mass.

Afro Tourism also claims that Brazzaville has some great nightlife to offer tourists and incredible markets, especially Marché Total, which falls among the biggest markets on the continent.
