Cape Town's Ratanga shut its doors in 2018, but plans are afoot to offer a smaller version.
South Africans rushed to catch the last of Ratanga Junction in May last year, after the 20-year-old theme park announced plans to shut its doors. And now less than a year later, a smaller version of the park is planned and set to open at the end of 2019.
Hyrpop Investment has announced it is developing Ratanga Junction into a down-scaled version as part of the new vibrant mixed-use precinct of around 120 000 square metres.
The theme park set to be revived as the Ratanga Family Entertainment Centre, which cost R350m to build two decades ago is going to be part a new R58m development as part of Canal Walk Mall, and not on the old site.
Hyprop CEO, Morné Wilken says, “The revamp and expansion will not only enable Canal Walk to attract the entire range of gourmets from ‘quick-and-easy’ to connoisseur, but is in-keeping with the family-oriented nature of Canal Walk by providing children’s entertainment in close proximity to the eating area,” he says.
The entertainment centre will run on a cashless card system that will automatically update with any tickets or coupons won by visitors. “We believe Ratanga will definitely be a key differentiator for the mall and improve foot count as well as dwell time.”
He adds that “the development speaks to the fact that malls in South Africa remain key destinations for retail and family entertainment, making this a worthwhile investment over the long term”.
Only the most popular and successful of the former rides will be selected, with plans to "bulk it up with international rides such as White Water Slides, the famous Peter Petz carousel, Bubble Boats for children and adult paddle boats on the canal"
The Ratanga Family Entertainment Centre is expected to open before the end of 2019, while the food court upgrade will kick-off in the first quarter of 2020.
