The best destinations honoured at the World Travel Awards to put on your 2020 travel list

The best of travel destinations, accommodations, airlines and other tourism extraordinaires were honoured last week at the Royal Opera House in Muscat, Oman.

The annual World Travel Awards - which has been celebrating excellence since 1993 - made its debut in the Middle Eastern country, which took home a few awards for their airport operations, First Class offering on Air Oman and the Leading Nature Destination award.

Etihad Airways came out on top for Leading Airline and Singapore's Changi Airport took home the Leading Airport award.

The top destination award went to Portugal, while also snagging Leading Islands for Madeira and best City Break for its capital Lisbon.

South Africa's bush destinations also won a few awards, although we lost Leading Safari Destination to Kenya. Silvan Safari took the award for best Luxury Lodge, Villa iZulu at Thanda Safari for best Luxury Private Villa and Leading Safari Resort went to Legend Golf and Safari Resort, while Shambala got the award for best Private Game Reserve.

Saxon Hotel, Villas and Spa took the award for best Boutique Hotel and Mantis Owners Collection - which has most of its properties in South Africa - took the award for Leading Villa Collection.

“It has been an honour to bring WTA to Oman for the first time in our 26-year history," said Graham Cooke, founder of the World Travel Awards. 

"What an incredible evening it has been here in the magnificent capital of Muscat. We have had the privilege of recognising the world’s leading hotels, destinations, airlines and travel providers and my congratulations to each of them.”
