With a water shortage still looming large in the Western Cape and other parts of the country, there's a consistent need to encourage responsible water usage across all industries.
One of the ways to ensure this in the tourism industry, and in turn award those establishments that prove to be the most water-efficient, is through the annual Sanlam Top Destination Awards.
In 2018, the Awards is expanding to include a new category - the Water Sustainability Award - which has been created in conjunction with Water 4 Cape Town and Cape Town Tourism, to reward the most water conscious travel and tourism establishment.

Enver Duminy, CEO of Cape Town Tourism says that "Securing a destination for future generations to enjoy cannot be done without businesses acknowledging and addressing sustainable tourism, and it's fitting to recognise those that do."
Water 4 Cape Town serves as an informative platform for Cape Town’s water crisis, advising locals on ways to save water through educational programmes and keeping the public informed with current water developments.
Awarding sustainability in tourism
Jonathan Pepler, founder of the Sanlam Top Destination Awards says that the Awards is growing its vision, starting with the Water Sustainability Award. "We are working at identifying and acknowledging establishments which strive towards all five pillars of sustainability,” he says.

The Awards, hosted by Discount Traveler South Africa, serves as a platform honouring Southern Africa's hospitality industry, encouraging establishments to do its best and be selected as national top destinations in various categories. It recognises hard-working hospitality establishments functioning in a demanding market.
The 2018 Awards ceremony will take place at The Table Bay Hotel in Camps Bay on 20 September. The Awards will see 40 winners from 13 400 nominees compete for the title of Top Destination in their respective categories and star grading. Winners will also receive a Sanlam Top Destination Awards trophy and certificate.
