Looking for a last-minute, budget-friendly flight to anywhere?

Sometimes we just need a break - and don't want to wrack our brains on where to go. If you're flexible with your leave, don't mind a few layovers and don't want to spend most of your savings on a flight ticket, here are a few destinations you can fly to from Johannesburg for R6 000 or less return.

You might even discover a place you've never thought of visiting before.

Geneva, Switzerland

Airline: With Kenya Airways you can get to Geneva for about R6 000, with 15 hour flight time there and back.

Top attraction in the city: Visit the city's Old Town, filled with beautiful architecture like the Cathédrale Saint-Pierre, quaint European restaurants and lovely views on pedestrian-only promenades.

Phuket, Thailand

Airline: Your best bet is flying with Etihad Airways, but it's a long haul - 17 hours to Phuket and 25 hours back. with one stop each way.

Cheapest month: October

Top attraction in the city: Like the rest of Thailand, Phuket is renowned for its beach life, with expansive sandy stretches, green jungle and pumping nightlife.

Milan, Italy

Airline: Try out Ethiopian Airlines with a 15-and-a-half hour flight time there and 14 hours back., with one stop both ways.

Top attraction in the city: Head to the historic Milan centre to see the famous Last Supper painting at the Santa Maria Delle Grazie convent.

São Tomé, São Tomé and Príncipe 

Airline: The only airline to fly to this West African island is TAAG, and for less than R6 000 you can fly there in 8 hours with a stop in Luanda, but on the way back may have a long layover with 23-and-a-half hours travel time.

Top attraction in the island: Cão Grande is the most well-known sight of the island – a giant pinnacle jutting out of a Jurassic jungle. It was once a volcano, but its outer parts have eroded away to leave behind its hardened centre.

Santiago, Chile

Airline: If you're ready for a super long travel time, you can get to Santiago for less than R5 000 with a combo flight between TAAG and GOL Linhas Aéreas with an average of 27 hours there and back with two stops including Rio de Janeiro.

Top attraction in the city: Take a cable car up San Cristóbal Hill and take in the whole city's skyline, while admiring the giant Virgin Mary statue above a chapel that was blessed by a pope.

Montevideo, Uruguay

Airline: You can take a similar route as flying to Santiago, although instead you'll be stopping over in Sao Paulo instead of Rio.

Top attraction in the city: Take in the arts at the country's most prestigious art centre - the Solís Theatre - built in in 1856 by an Italian architect, and it's situated in the city's Old Town.

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

Airline: To fly cheaply to the UAE's other big city, fly with Egyptair (partly operated by Etihad) with a stopover in Cairo and an average travel time of 16 hours.

Top attraction in the city: Motorheads would love a visit to the Ferrari World, an indoor amusement park that's home to the world's fastest roller coaster.

Mumbai, India

Airline: For less than R5 000 you can fly to Mumbai with Air Seychelles, with a 10-hour-and-40-minute flight each way and a stopover on the Indian Ocean island.

Top attraction in the city: Find inner peace at the giant Global Vipassana Pagoda, a traditional Burmese temple that shares the teachings of Gotama the Buddha.

Kigali, Rwanda

Airline: You can hop over to this African country for less than R5 000 direct either with their own airline RwandAir or our very own SAA.

Cheapest month: October

Top attraction in the city: To remember those lost to intolerance, make a sombre visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial to learn more about the events that led to the infamous massacre.

Tel Aviv, Israel

Airline: Fly with Rwandair for an average of 15 hours both ways and two stopovers in Lusaka and Kigali.

Top attraction in the city: Browse through the scents, clothes and food of the Carmel Market, and prices normally make your wallet very happy.

Airline: You can do a combo trip with TAAG Angola Airlines and TAP Air Portugal, with a two-stop flight to Porto over 17 hours and a one-stop flight back over almost 15 hours.
