Sunniest, creature comforts and best for nightlife - World's best beaches to suit your taste and where SA ranks

The worlds top beaches ranked according to visitor ratings, average air & water temperature, average days of sunshine, number of close by hotels, restaurants, activities & nightlife. 

Alpha Travel Insurance has created the index according to these and a few other factors.  Overall the world's best beach - Grace Bay, on the Turks & Caicos Islands, is the highest rated beach overall, with a score of 96 out of 100 taking the crown. 

The best beaches index shows Mexico has the most beaches in the top 23. If you choose your beach according to the rays you can catch through out the year you'll have to look elsewhere though, as this number one beach Maya Bay, on Koh Phi Phi, Thailand it is currently closed indefinitely. It is ranked for tops in this category for having sunshine some 352 days of the year. 

The beach with the most options for nightlife is Bavaro Beach, Punta Cana, in the Dominican Republic, with 19 to choose from. 

To avoid the crowds, they looked at the beaches with the fewest hotels within easy reach and combined this with the number of nearby restaurants with a great visitor rating to find out which beach is the best for creature comforts.

Malmok Beach, Noord, Aruba came out on top with just 5 hotels nearby, all having a visitor rating of 4 or more, and an average rating of 4.5 for its local restaurants.  See the overall interactive list here.

Where SA's beaches fit in:

Coffee Bay along the Wild Coast made it onto the overall list at position 21, with a high ranking for its weather at 21.31 according to the index.

The Garden Route's Noetzie Beach also came in at 25 on the list with a score of 59.86, with its weather adding to its appeal.

Pink Sands Beach (Harbor Island, Bahamas)

Anse Source d'Argent (La Digue Island, Seychelles)

Matira Beach, Bora Bora, French Polynesia

Malmok Beach, Noord, Aruba
